About the Event

The Art of Aging Well is an exhibition and public program series on art and its role in healthy aging, presented by the New York Academy of Medicine in partnership with the Carter Burden Gallery. The exhibition runs September 16 - October 8, 2026, at the New York Academy of Medicine, 1216 Fifth Avenue, and features work by professional printmakers.

Graphic medicine is a powerful visual tool to communicate about physical or mental health, illness, caregiving, or patient and physician experiences. In this hands-on workshop, cartoonist and educator Kriota Willberg shares her experiences and information on creating comics about anatomy, palliative care, death and dying, caregiving, and self-care. Plus she’ll share the potential inspiration of NYAM’s vast historical library collections. She will tutor participants through their graphic storytelling practice inspired by their life transition, birth, aging, loss, caregiving, illness, recovery, and more. Kriota will also offer opportunities for those desiring to share their works online. Participants will explore the many forms of graphic medicine by creating a preliminary sketch short comic of their own and learn about the process of making potential single panel comics, mini comics, and graphic memoirs! No artistic or cartooning experience is needed! Participants may use workshop sketching materials provided by NYAM or, if preferred you may bring your own sketch materials or digital drawing media.
