Sunday 20 September | 4 - 6PM The Creative Center, 184 Eldridge Street, New York, 10002
During this art therapy workshop, we will discuss some of the actual and mythological history of textile arts, their connection to text and narrative, and the beneficial impacts of engaging in work with fibers that entertain both the destructive cathartic release and the possibility of creating a new whole out of disparate threads. Workshop participants will be guided through a sensory exploration and the unraveling of a piece of fabric to create their own re-imagined visual narrative.
Participants will also be introduced to several simple, portable methods for weaving which they can integrate into daily mindful practice for relaxation, pain relief, and creative expression. A closing discussion of the participant's experience will conclude the session.
If you are interested in art therapy and want to learn how creative expression can support your health, mental health, and overall wellbeing, we invite you to attend!
Materials will be provided.
As one of the nation’s first arts in health organizations, The Creative Center at University Settlement has been transforming the healthcare experience for over thirty years. By centering art-making as a vital tool for emotional resilience and healing through an evidence-based, participatory approach, we connect individuals navigating cancer and chronic illness, caregivers, and older adults with professional artists in a collaborative, trauma-informed environment.
Through the integration of high-quality arts programming across a robust network of hospitals, community-based organizations and cultural institutions, we provide a restorative space where participants find opportunities for self-expression, reclaimed agency, and a renewed sense of health and wellbeing.
