The first Community Mural Project reveal of 2026! This initiative is believed to be the country's largest public hospital mural program, beginning in the 1930s.
NYC Health + Hospitals will unveil a new mural as part of the Community Mural Project run by the health system’s Arts in Medicine department.
Youth are shown in everyday scenes: playing basketball, at the barbershop, and being guided through safety in an intimate scene of hostility. Signs calling for peace and the protection of children highlight the community’s collective stand against gun violence. Affiliated organization logos are woven throughout the scene, representing grassroots groups as vital partners in supporting young people. The hospital marked with the rod of Asclepius reinforces health and healing as essential forms of protection. Birds in flight—the dove, the pigeon, and the eagle—with dandelions scattered across the mural, symbolize freedom, hope, and renewal. By replacing weapons with acts of mentorship, unity, and care, the imagery uplifts a vision where youth thrive with confidence and security. The mural demonstrates that when families, organizations, and neighbors come together, peace and opportunity become the foundation of community life.
